How GST works on Australian invoices

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a 10% tax on most goods and services sold or consumed in Australia. If you are registered for GST, you collect this 10% on behalf of the government, include it on your invoices, and pay it to the ATO when you file your Business Activity Statement (BAS).

On an invoice, GST appears as a separate line item between the subtotal and the total. Your clients who are also GST-registered can then claim that GST back as an input tax credit — which is why issuing a correct tax invoice matters to them.

AusInvoice auto-calculates your GST and displays it correctly on every invoice. Toggle GST on or off, and switch between GST-inclusive and exclusive pricing with a single click.

Quick GST tip:

To find the GST in a GST-inclusive price: divide the total by 11.
Example: $220 ÷ 11 = $20 GST. The pre-GST price is $200.

To add GST to a GST-exclusive price: multiply by 1.1.
Example: $200 × 1.1 = $220 total.

GST calculation examples

GST-Exclusive pricing (+ GST)

Your price does not include GST — GST is added on top.

Web design services$1,000.00
Subtotal$1,000.00
GST (10%)$100.00
Total (AUD)$1,100.00

GST-Inclusive pricing (inc. GST)

Your price already includes GST — the GST component is extracted from the total.

Web design services (inc. GST)$1,100.00
GST included (÷ 11)$100.00
Total (AUD)$1,100.00

GST registration and invoicing requirements

When you must register for GST

  • Your annual turnover reaches or is expected to reach $75,000 in any 12-month period
  • You provide taxi or rideshare services (regardless of turnover)
  • You want to claim fuel tax credits
  • You provide digital services to Australian consumers (for offshore businesses)

What GST registration means for invoicing

  • Your invoices become "Tax Invoices" (not just "Invoices")
  • You must show your ABN on all tax invoices
  • You must show the GST amount for each taxable supply
  • Invoices over $1,000 must include the buyer's identity or ABN
  • You collect GST and pay it to the ATO via BAS
  • You can claim GST credits on business purchases

GST invoice FAQ

How do I calculate GST on an invoice?
GST in Australia is 10% of the pre-GST price (GST-exclusive). For example, if your service costs $100 excluding GST, the GST is $10 and the total is $110. If the price already includes GST (GST-inclusive), the GST component is calculated by dividing the total by 11. For example, a $110 GST-inclusive price includes $10 GST. AusInvoice calculates both automatically with a single toggle.
What is the difference between GST-inclusive and GST-exclusive pricing?
GST-exclusive pricing means your quoted price does not include GST — the GST is added on top at checkout or on the invoice. For example, "$100 + GST" means $110 total. GST-inclusive pricing means the price already includes GST — for example, "$110 including GST" means the price is $110, of which $10 is GST. Both are legal and common in Australia. AusInvoice supports both with a single toggle.
Do I need to show GST separately on an invoice?
Yes. Your tax invoice must show either the GST amount for each line item separately, or include a statement that the total price includes GST of a specified amount. Most invoicing tools (including AusInvoice) show GST as a separate line item between the subtotal and the total, which is the clearest approach.
Who needs to charge GST in Australia?
Any business registered for GST must charge GST on taxable supplies. GST registration is mandatory once your annual turnover reaches or is expected to reach $75,000 ($150,000 for non-profit organisations). You can also register voluntarily below this threshold.
Can I charge GST on all items?
Not all goods and services are subject to GST. Some items are GST-free (zero-rated), such as basic foods, medical services, and exports. Other items are input-taxed (such as financial services and residential rents). For most freelancers and contractors, all their services are taxable at 10%. If you are unsure, consult a tax agent.
What is the $75,000 GST registration threshold?
If your annual turnover from taxable supplies is $75,000 or more (or you expect it to reach this), you must register for GST. This is a rolling 12-month threshold, not just the financial year. Once registered, you must charge GST on your taxable supplies and file Business Activity Statements (BAS) quarterly or monthly.
